The Grip

St Mellion - Darren Gass

The Grip does many things. It not only connects you to the club as many would believe but also allows you to load the club, create and transfer energy into the club, find the correct swing plane both back and forth and control the club whilst doing so.

I believe that if more club players were aware of these facts there would be less golfers struggling along trying to perfect their swing motion and a higher percentage of club players improving this key fundamental and playing better golf accordingly.

Clearly the grip is a crucial element for good golf!

The most common grip problem is the weak and palm grip made by the top hand. Along with being unresponsive causing a loss of power in the swing this hand position produces friction. Some of you may be able to relate to this by your golf glove wearing out at the back top of the hand just a few rounds after purchase (See picture 1).

To place your left hand on the club properly just follow these simple instructions. Hold the club out in front of you just below the handle with your bottom hand (The right hand for a right handed player). Now place the club along the top of the fingers of the top hand. Not across the palm!

You must be able to see the triangle of light. This is formed between the club and the forearms (See picture 2). Now close the hand around the handle, what you will find is that the meaty pad at the back of the hand where you used to wear the glove is now located more on top of the handle rather than to the side.

As you look down on the club other key points to look for are, the thumb should be slightly down the right side of the grip and connected to the hand with the thumb joint and index finger knuckle in line (See picture 3).
