Golf in Surrey news: Hard work pays off for David Howell

Friday, 30 July 2010

Surrey-based golfer David Howell believes he has sheer hard graft to thank for his impressive start to this week's Irish Open at Killarney.

Speaking after opening up a one-shot lead with a seven-under-par round of 64, the 35-year-old admitted he has endured a difficult time over the last few years, but expressed optimism that he has overcome the worst of his woes.

"I've been working hard and persevering," he explained. "Been back with my coach for six months now, Clive Tucker, my old coach, and we are working really hard on some technique things. I've certainly been hitting the ball a lot better."

Howell acknowledged he had felt some frustration at his struggle to find form, but said he had never considered quitting the game altogether, even though his slump in performances was "not a lot of fun".
