Robert Rock dismayed by scoring blunder

Friday, 30 July 2010

English golfer Robert Rock has admitted to being frustrated after a marking error resulted in his disqualification from the Irish Open.

The Staffordshire-born player was thrown out of the tournament by stewards at the Killarney golf course after it emerged that his card indicated a par at the 14th and a birdie at the 15th, when it should have been the other way around.

"I checked it, but didn't see it and it's my job to do that. I don't think I've been disqualified for anything before," he explained afterwards. "I didn't have a clue until it was pointed out to me the scores were different."

Rock acknowledged that the decision had been "disappointing", but refused to pin the blame on tournament organisers and accepted the fault was purely his own.

Resurgent fellow countryman David Howell sat at the top of the leaderboard after the first round's play, shooting an impressive 64.ADNFCR-2334-ID-800008741-ADNFCR
