Lee Westwood aiming to step up

Thursday, 29 July 2010

World number three Lee Westwood believes he has not yet reached the peak of his game and already has his eye on securing his first ever major championship next year.

In an interview with the Yorkshire Post, the Nottinghamshire-born golfer dismissed suggestions a lack of self-confidence is holding him back and claimed it is "only a matter of time" before he brings a major trophy back to England.

"There's only one major left this year, but I don't see any reason why if I work hard between the PGA Championship and the Masters next year I can't up my game another level," he told the newspaper.

Westwood pointed out that he has found a "good level of consistency" by finishing inside the top three at the last five majors, putting him safely among the golfing elite.

A win at next week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio could see Westwood overtake Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to reach the top of golf's world rankings for the first time.ADNFCR-2334-ID-800007870-ADNFCR
