Graeme McDowell confident ahead of Irish Open

Thursday, 29 July 2010

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell has declared himself highly optimistic about his chances at the Irish Open this week and has been spurred on by Rory McIlroy's recent exploits at St Andrews.

McIlroy, a close friend of McDowell's, shot a stunning round of 63 in the British Open earlier this month and McDowell suggested to the Belfast Telegraph that he could be looking to top that achievement at Killarney.

"[The golf course is] in great shape - especially the greens - and with the forecast for more rain to keep them soft, someone is going to go crazy," he explained on the eve of the championship. "A 59 could be on the radar."

McDowell added that he intends to take a short break after the PGA Championship to recharge his batteries for the Ryder Cup, but will play in at least one tournament prior to the transatlantic clash in October.

The 30-year-old sealed his first-ever major title by winning the US Open at Pebble Beach last month.ADNFCR-2334-ID-800007874-ADNFCR
