Lee Westwood 'could top world rankings'

Wednesday, 28 July 2010

Lee Westwood's surge up golf's world rankings in recent months has provided him with an opportunity to overtake current top two Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson with a victory this week.

The 37-year-old is currently preparing to take part in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio and with less than one point separating the trio, a win in that tournament could see any one of them topping the chart after the event.

Although Mickelson has trailed Woods in second place for more than 200 weeks, he has largely failed to take advantage of Woods' well-publicised woes on and off the golf course and has put in a string of underwhelming performances in recent months.

Hertfordshire golfers Ian Poulter and Luke Donald both dropped in the latest rankings, with Poulter falling by two places to tenth and Donald down to seventh despite a third-placed finish at the recent RBC Canadian Open.

Earlier this week, Westwood told the Press Association he would relish the opportunity to captain the European Ryder Cup squad in the future.ADNFCR-2334-ID-800007118-ADNFCR
