Padraig Harrington confident of Ryder Cup spot

Wednesday, 28 July 2010

Irish golfer Padraig Harrington is still hopeful he will feature in Colin Montgomerie's European Ryder Cup squad later this year, despite intense competition from some of the continent's top stars.

Speaking ahead of the 3 Irish Open in Kilkenny, Harrington revealed he had been subjected to questions over his form, with one journalist asking if he would withdraw from the team if he was selected, due to some disappointing recent performances.

"I've had more top tens in the last year than I've ever had in my career, so going on a guideline that most people use I've actually had the best year of my career," he explained. "My form has actually been solid enough."

Other players who are not yet guaranteed a place in Monty's side include England's Luke Donald - who finished third in the RBC Canadian Open earlier this week - and Italian Eduardo Molinari.

Earlier this week, Montgomerie named Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn and Paul McGinley as his vice-captains for the transatlantic contest at Celtic Manor in October.ADNFCR-2334-ID-800007120-ADNFCR
