Golf in Hertfordshire news: Ian Poulter eager for Ryder Cup win

Tuesday, 27 July 2010

World number eight Ian Poulter has revealed he is determined to help Colin Montgomerie's European team take back the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in October.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Hertfordshire-born golfer revealed that his selection for the tournament two years ago had provided a huge confidence boost, but suggested the American win that year was a positive outcome for the event itself.

"Obviously, I'd have rather won the Ryder Cup in 2008, but I guess you could say it was good for the future of the Ryder Cup for America to win as they'd had two big defeats in 2004 and 2006," he told the broadcaster.

Poulter added that it "makes no sense" to say that the American squad will be stronger without the out-of-form Tiger Woods and reiterated his belief that Woods remains the game's best player.

Despite being typically bullish in the run-up to this month's British Open, Poulter endured a difficult time at St Andrews, finishing on three over par. ADNFCR-2334-ID-800006025-ADNFCR
