Lee Westwood eyes Ryder Cup captaincy

Tuesday, 27 July 2010

World number three Lee Westwood has admitted he would jump at the chance to lead the European Ryder Cup squad into battle in a future tournament.

In an interview with the Press Association, the Nottinghamshire-born golfer asserted that he will not assume the mantle of skipper for a number of years, but observed that Colin Montgomerie is the seventh Ryder Cup captain he has played under.

"I've got a lot of experience playing in the Ryder Cup and a lot of experience of different captains and the way they've all done it and I should be able to look back and know what to do and what not to do," he told the news provider.

Westwood also praised Montgomerie's selection as skipper, describing the veteran Scotsman as "very passionate" about the game.

The European team will be looking to regain the trophy from their American rivals when the sides compete at south Wales' Celtic Manor golf course in October.ADNFCR-2334-ID-800006031-ADNFCR
