'Scottish golf' to receive £2m investment

Thursday, 11 March 2010

A £2 million investment from sportscotland will benefit the Scottish Golf Union and the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association, it has been announced.

First minister Alex Salmond announced that the funding would also contribute towards the Women's British Open championships and the Ryder Cup, which the country will host in 2014.

Louise Martin CBE, chair of sportscotland, added: "This marks an important step forward for the future of golf in Scotland, filling in the last piece of the puzzle to allow Scotland's golfing talent to flourish."

Scotland's junior programme clubgolf will also benefit from the investment drive and it is expected that it will improve on the already successful attempts to introduce more children to the sport.

So far 140,000 youngsters have been introduced to golf through the initiative, which ultimately seeks to help amateurs make the move into the professional ranks.

The funding will provide a £500,000 proportion of the grant to the Scottish Golf Union and the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association.
