Ping Eye 2 irons and wedges banned by PGA Tour

Wednesday, 10 March 2010

The PGA Tour has overlooked a nearly 20-year-old lawsuit which allowed all Ping Eye 2 irons and wedges manufactured at that time to be allowed in all tournaments.

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said he appreciates the announcement made by Ping chairman and chief executive, John Solheim that he will waive his right to prevent the PGA prohibition.

However, Mr Solheim wanted to reassure players that the iron and wedge will be allowed in amateur competitions that use the US PGA golfing rule book.

The USGA has stated that it will conduct a public discussion later this year to reassess the rule-making process.

In response to this proposal, Mr Finchem said: "The PGA Tour will actively participate in the forum and will offer its own views on how the process may be improved."

The wedges caused some controversy earlier this year after it was found that they enabled an illegal spin when leaving the rough.

Phil Mickelson and John Daly are both professional patrons of the wedges, which use U-shaped grooves.
