Fans show support for Madrid Ryder Cup

Tuesday, 9 March 2010

Spain has been voted ahead of five other countries in a fans' survey to be the host of the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Gonzaga Escauriaza, president of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG), told SportBusiness that there were over 100,000 federated golfers in Madrid alone and spoke of how the sport means so much to the country.

He said: "For us, to be the heartland, the home of golf outside Great Britain and Ireland, is important because of the tourism opportunities."

The president added that his country is the primary golf tourism destination in Europe with more than 500,000 trips each year - 60 per cent from abroad.

Spain was voted to be the host country by 37 per cent of the respondents, ahead of the other five candidates - Portugal, Sweden, France, Germany and the Netherlands.

The host nation for the 42nd edition of the Ryder Cup will be announced next year and it is hoped that a success for Spain will give tourism a boost in the country.ADNFCR-2334-ID-19659114-ADNFCR
