Wilson gains first-round advantage at Honda Classic

Friday, 5 March 2010

Oliver Wilson has succeeded in the first round at the Honda Classic with a bogey-free 66.

The golfer from Mansfield is behind leaders Michael Connell and the Australian Nathan Green, who have a shared score of 65.

Wilson reached the quarter-finals of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship last month, which was a step further than last year.

Speaking to the Nottingham Evening Post, he said that if he can carry on beating his European counterparts he will stand a good chance of entering the Ryder Cup in October.

"I feel that my game is in good shape, my swing has been good and the changes that I made over Christmas have started to get more engrained," remarked the 29-year-old.

Surrey golfer and runner-up at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Paul Casey lost his focus on the back nine in the first round and retired to the clubhouse after he could only manage a three over.
