Golf in Hertfordshire news: Ian Poulter wins Golfer of the Month

Thursday, 4 March 2010

Hertfordshire golfer Ian Poulter has won the European Tour golfer of the month award for February following his victory in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.

The 34-year-old beat Paul Casey 4&2 in the final in Arizona last month to secure his first win in the US.

And the triumph has also led him to pick up the European Tour honour for the first time, for which he received an engraved dish and a jeroboam of Moet & Chandon champagne.

Poulter, who grew up playing on Hertfordshire golf courses, expressed his delight at this recognition and commented about the hard work he had invested before the season began.

He said: "I worked a lot on my game in the off season, particularly on the shots from 100 yards and in, and I think that paid off - I certainly felt like I came out strongly at the start of the year."

The golfer is now the first English winner of the WGC-Accenture Championship and is at fifth place in the world rankings.
