Golf amateur Chris Wood enters Maybank Malaysian Open

Wednesday, 3 March 2010

Chris Wood, the 22-year-old 2009 rookie of the year, has entered the Maybank Malaysian Open.

The English golfer said he is looking forward to the tournament but quipped that his first experience of playing in Malaysia was "like constantly playing in a steam room".

Before the start of Maybank Open, on Thursday, he told the Press Association about his first round defeat to Lee Westwood at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, which took place earlier this year.

He said: "I played okay but just couldn't score very well. It still feels like I haven't played enough golf yet so it feels like I am just starting the season."

Wood, the world number 68, grew up playing in the England Amateur system which he believes has had a significant impact on the careers of English professionals over the last decade.

The Bristol-born golfer made his mark in the sport when he came fifth in the 2008 Open and gained a place in the WGC-Accenture Championship after Phil Mickelson dropped out.
