Ernie Els takes charity award

Tuesday, 2 March 2010

Ernie Els has received an award from the Golf Writers Association of America for his charity work.

A world renowned golfer, Els will pick up the prize next month at the annual awards dinner in Augusta.

The South African, who has had two top-ten finishes this year, has been a generous contributor to charitable causes for much of his career.

He commented: "The mark of a true man is not what he takes in life, but what he gives back."

Since his seven-year-old son, Ben, was diagnosed with autism Els has worked to donate money for the affliction.

He is currently working to raise approximately £20 million for a new autism treatment centre.

Els is 26th in the FedEx Cup standings for this year. He has finished inside the top 20 in the last three years and has already managed to score almost half as many points as he did in 2009.
