Lee Westwood hails opponent's bunker play

Monday, 8 February 2010

Following his playoff defeat to Miguel Angel Jimenez at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, English golfer Lee Westwood has described the Spaniard as the best bunker player on the European Tour.

Westwood highlighted a pivotal moment in the three-hole playoff at the Emirates Golf Club, when his opponent came within an inch of sending his ball into the water on the first hole.

He claimed that 99 times out of 100 the ball would have trickled in to the hazard, but this time it did not and Jimenez was able to take advantage of this luck.

The Englishman said: "He's also one of the best bunker players on tour. He still plays one of his poor bunker shots, but holes out to stay in it. That's one of those things, play-offs can be like that."

Jimenez, who at 46 is the oldest player to win on the European Tour since Mark O'Meara in 2004, described himself as being like a fine wine - getting better with age.

The next stop on the tour is the Avanthi Masters in New Delhi, India, which starts on February 11th.ADNFCR-2334-ID-19603803-ADNFCR
