Casey set for cautious return to golf in Spain

Wednesday, 28 October 2009

Paul Casey has said that he will be taking no chances with his physical condition during the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain this week.

The Surrey golfer is due to start his first event since early August after recovering from a troublesome rib muscle injury, but has pledged to withdraw immediately if the problem flares up again.

Asked what it would take to cut his comeback appearance short, Casey told the Press Association: "One sharp pain - that's enough. I'll be out of here.

"I'm not going to push it and do any more damage."

The World Match Play Championship takes place at Finca Cortesin in Casares for the first time this week after moving from its longstanding home at Wentworth in Surrey.

Casey won the event in 2006 and is the number one seed this time around, with his opening match against Australia's Scott Strange getting the tournament underway on Thursday (October 29th).

The Englishman will also play against Retief Goosen and Anthony Kim in the round-robin stage.
